Ride of a Lifetime in Sri Lanka – But Please
Travel Safe
π Let’s protect the ones
who come to explore Sri Lanka. π
But what most people don’t talk about is the hidden
danger behind those picture-perfect moments — especially when travelers are
unaware of the narrow tunnels and risky track conditions. That’s exactly why I
made this video.
π This famous train route
has 46 tunnels, with the longest stretching 562 meters. These tunnels are
extremely narrow, and when passengers lean out for selfies or videos, even by a
few inches, they risk striking the tunnel walls — which can be deadly.
⚠️ Important Safety Notice for Train
Travelers ⚠️
The train ride from Colombo to Ella is slow-moving in the beautiful
upcountry, which makes it tempting—and common—for passengers to step onto
platforms or open doorways to take pictures or videos while the train is
running. This habit might seem harmless but can be extremely dangerous.
In recent years, several serious accidents have happened involving
tourists taking risks during the journey
⚠️ In 2019, a 24-year-old French tourist tragically died
after falling from a moving train near Haputale while taking a selfie hanging
out of the door.
⚠️ In 2022, a Spanish tourist was fatally struck by a
train near the Nine Arch Bridge while walking on the tracks — a popular photo
spot but an active railway.
⚠️ In March 2025, a 37-year-old Iranian tourist was
seriously injured after falling from the Ella Odyssey tourist train while
attempting to take a selfie.
⚠️ Also in 2025, an Australian woman was injured in a
train accident while taking a selfie.
⚠️ On May 9, 2025, a 35-year-old Chinese woman sustained
critical injuries after falling from a moving train near the 19th railway
tunnel in Idalgashinna.
⚠️ Multiple travelers have suffered head injuries from
leaning out of tunnels, with injuries ranging from fractures to near-death
experiences.
⚠️ There have been cases of near-decapitation when
tourists leaned out during tunnel crossings, narrowly escaping fatal harm.
⚠️ Several tourists have fallen while filming videos from
open doors, especially on sharp curves and hilly areas, sometimes resulting in
severe injuries.
Please stay safe: Always remain inside the train and never lean out of windows or
doors while it is moving. Avoid walking on the tracks at all times. The train
often stops at several beautiful viewpoints and stations along the route—these
are the safest places to step out briefly and capture stunning photos. Enjoy
this breathtaking journey responsibly so you can fully experience Sri Lanka’s
natural beauty without harm.
