Planning to hike in Sri Lanka's rainforests or hill country? Don’t worry about leeches—they're not dangerous, just a little annoying. With the right tips and natural remedies, you can enjoy your trek with confidence!
๐บ️๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ญ๐:
Leeches are not common in all areas of Sri Lanka. You won’t find them in most beach towns, cultural sites, dry zones, or cities like Colombo, Galle, Anuradhapura, or along the south coast.
However, they do appear in some moist, forested highland areas, especially during or after rains.
• Knuckles Mountain Range
• Sinharaja Rainforest
• Ella and Bandarawela forest trails
• Hanthana, Nuwara Eliya, Kitulgala, and parts of Belihuloya
If you’re exploring these areas, here’s how to stay safe ๐

✅ Apply Sidhalepa Balm or Dettol
Rub on your feet, legs, and shoes before you hike. Dettol mixed with water or coconut oil works well.
✅ Use natural insect repellents
Look for ones with citronella, neem oil, or eucalyptus oil. Spray on your shoes and legs.
✅ DIY Anti-Leech Spray
Mix salt + water in a spray bottle and use on your shoes, socks, and pants.
✅ Wear Leech Socks
Buy them at local stores like Sky A (around Rs. 1,000). They fully protect your legs from leeches.
✅ Coconut Oil + Soap + Salt Mix
Rub this mix on your legs before trekking—it’s a chemical-free local solution that works!
✅ Avoid wet, leafy ground
Leeches love moisture. Stay on dry, clear trails and avoid sitting on wet rocks or leaves.
