Gluten-Free Sri Lanka Travel Guide πΈ
Traveling gluten-free doesn’t have to be stressful – and Sri Lanka is one
of the easiest countries to enjoy without worrying about wheat. Why? Because
our everyday food is naturally gluten-free. Rice, coconut, fresh
vegetables, seafood, fruits, and spices make up the heart of Sri Lankan
cuisine.
π What You Can Eat
Safely
- Rice & Curry (Bath &
Curry) – The staple meal! A plate usually comes with dhal curry, potato
curry, beans, pumpkin, jackfruit, leafy mallum, and a choice of fish,
chicken, or egg. Almost always gluten-free.
- String Hoppers (Idiyappam) – Steamed rice flour noodles,
light and perfect with curry.
- Hoppers (Appa) – Bowl-shaped pancakes made from
rice flour & coconut milk.
- Pittu – Steamed mix of rice flour
& grated coconut, eaten with curry or coconut milk.
- Kiribath (Milk Rice) – Creamy coconut-milk rice,
often served at festivals.
- Fresh Seafood – Prawns, crab, fish curries –
all naturally gluten-free.
- Vegetable Curries & Mallum – Greens, okra, pumpkin,
drumstick, beans… full of variety.
- Tropical Fruits & Drinks – King coconut, mango, papaya,
pineapple, wood apple juice – refreshing and safe!
⚠️ What to Avoid – Kottu roti, paratha/roti,
bread, buns, patties, and most bakery “short eats” – , street foods -all made
with wheat flour.
π° How Much Does It
Cost?
Gluten-free eating in Sri Lanka is not expensive. Even a small
roadside “hotel” (local restaurant) will serve a rice & curry plate for LKR
200–400 ($0.70 – $1.20) depending on the location.
In tourist areas or boutique cafΓ©s, prices can be higher, but the food is still
affordable compared to Western countries.
π£️ How to Ask in
Sinhala
When you want to check if a dish has wheat flour, here are simple phrases
you can use:
- “Mama pan piti kannΓ© nehΓ©.” – I don’t eat wheat flour.
- “MewagΓ© pan piti tiyanawadΔ?” – Does this contain wheat flour?
- “Mama gluten-free kanna ona.” – I need to eat gluten-free.
Most locals may not know the word gluten, so it’s easier to say pan
piti (wheat flour). Rice flour is called “haal piti” in Sinhala.
π‘ Where You Can Buy
