This is one of the few 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 left in Sri Lanka — raw, real, and deeply peaceful. 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 remains one of Sri Lanka’s last unspoiled mountain treasures.
Just about 𝟏𝟓𝟎 𝐤𝐦 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨, hidden in the cool highlands of 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐲𝐚, lies 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 — a mountain paradise untouched by time. My journey
there was an 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, surrounded by mist, waterfalls, and
the peaceful silence of the hills.

, the 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞
is one of Sri
Lanka’s oldest and most scenic tea estates, dating back to the British colonial
era. The name “Nonpareil” means “unparalleled”, and it truly
lives up to its name — endless stretches of lush tea fields spread across the
hills, kissed by mist and mountain breeze.
The drive along 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞
𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 in the 𝐍𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐤 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧— famous for its 𝟑𝟑 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 — is an experience by itself. Each turn opens up a new

changes constantly, making it a photographer’s paradise. Whether by foot,
bicycle, or vehicle, every moment feels timeless.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 – 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥
A few kilometers into the estate, you’ll find the beautiful 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥, a serene 40–45 meter cascade hidden
among tea bushes and forest. It belongs to the 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭, near the route that leads to 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬.
During my visit, rain had just begun, and as the mist thickened, 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 along the slopes — a breathtaking 𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 that made the journey truly magical.

nature lovers and photographers alike.
🌄 Second Stop –
Baker’s Bend
Our journey continued to the legendary 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝, one of the most spectacular
viewpoints in Sri Lanka. The bend is located on the 𝟮𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻
of the Nonpareil
Estate Road, near 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗮, at an altitude of about 𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 (𝟭,𝟱𝟯𝟬 𝗺) above sea level.
From here, you can see:
- The 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗱𝘂𝘄𝗮, 𝗚𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮, and 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 mountain ranges
- The 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗲𝘄𝗮 and 𝗨𝗱𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗿𝘀glimmering below
- The 𝗡𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗸 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻and 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀rising behind in lush green
elegance
The climate here is cool and misty, much like Nuwara Eliya — ideal for
relaxation and reflection.
🐎 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝
The story behind Baker’s Bend adds charm to its natural beauty. It is
said that 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫, who helped develop Nuwara Eliya,
frequently traveled through this area. One day, his horse tragically slipped
and fell off the cliff. Heartbroken, Baker designed the bend in the 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐞 to honor his loyal horse.
Since then, 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝
has stood as both a
scenic wonder and a symbol of loyalty and memory.
