Buddhist meditation is a beautiful way to calm the mind, cultivate compassion, and experience inner peace. There are many types of meditation, but today we will focus on one of the most cherished forms taught by the Buddha: Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta Bhavana).

Loving-Kindness Meditation cultivates unconditional love, kindness, and goodwill toward yourself and others.

Practicing Metta helps to:

Cultivate inner peace, love, and emotional well-being
Reduce anger, resentment, jealousy, and ill will
Promote compassion, patience, and forgiveness
Develop a mind that wishes happiness for all beings
Live in harmony and support a kinder world 🌎

The Buddha taught: “A mind filled with Metta is limitless like the sky” 🌌

1️⃣ Sit Comfortably
Find a quiet place, sit with a straight back, or lie down if needed.

2️⃣ Start with Yourself
Close your eyes, place a hand on your heart, and silently repeat:
💛 “May I be happy. May I be safe. May I be healthy. May I live with ease.”

3️⃣ Extend Metta to Someone You Love
Visualize a loved one and repeat:
💛 “May you be happy. May you be safe. May you be healthy. May you live with ease.”

4️⃣ Extend Metta to a Neutral Person
Think of someone you see regularly but feel neutral about, like a neighbor or cashier.

5️⃣ Extend Metta to a Difficult Person
Send them the same well-wishes. This helps reduce anger and build forgiveness.

6️⃣ Extend Metta to All Beings
💛 “May all beings be happy, safe, and free from suffering.”

📜 What Did Lord Buddha Teach About Metta?

In the Karaniya Metta Sutta, the Buddha said:
“Just as a mother protects her only child with her life, so should one cultivate a boundless heart of loving-kindness to all beings.”

Metta leads to:

💛 Inner peace
💛 Happiness
💛 Freedom from hatred and ill will
💛 Progress toward enlightenment (Nibbana)

Sri Lanka is a beautiful Buddhist country, steeped in centuries of spiritual wisdom and serene temples. If you ever visit, don’t miss the chance to experience meditation in its most authentic form.

Whether it’s Mindfulness Meditation (Vipassana), Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta), Anapanasati (Breath Awareness), or Walking Meditation, each practice offers a path to inner peace and clarity.

Imagine sitting quietly under the shade of a Bodhi tree, the same tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, listening to the soft chants of monks, and feeling your mind slowly let go of stress, anger, and worry. Practicing meditation here, guided by a wise Buddhist monk, is not just an activity—it is an awakening of the heart. 🌿

Even a few minutes of meditation here can fill your heart with peace, compassion, and joy, leaving you refreshed in body, mind, and soul. This is a must-do experience for anyone seeking a deeper sense of calm and spiritual connection.

We are very lucky because the Supreme Buddha, our Great Teacher, has taught us all about morality, concentration, and wisdom. Now, without anger, ill will, or jealousy, let’s spread loving-kindness to all beings.

Think in this way:

May I be free from anger.
May I be free from ill will.
May I be free from jealousy.
May I be free from mental suffering.
May I be free from physical suffering.
May I live in peace.
May I live happily.

Repeat:

May I be free from anger.
May I be free from ill will.
May I be free from jealousy.
May I be free from mental suffering.
May I be free from physical suffering.
May I live in peace.
May I live happily.

Extend to all beings:

May all beings in this place:
... be free from anger.
... be free from ill will.
... be free from jealousy.
... be free from mental suffering.
... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings live in peace.
May all beings live happily.

May all beings in this city:
... be free from anger.
... be free from ill will.
... be free from jealousy.
... be free from mental suffering.
... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings in this city live in peace.
May all beings in this city live happily.

May all beings in this province:
... be free from anger.
... ... be free from ill will.
... ... be free from jealousy.
... ... be free from mental suffering.
... ... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings in this province live in peace.
May all beings in this province live happily.

May all beings in this country:
... be free from anger.
... be free from ill will.
... be free from jealousy.
... be free from mental suffering.
... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings in this country live in peace.
May all beings in this country live happily.

May all beings in this world:
... be free from anger.
... be free from ill will.
... be free from jealousy.
... be free from mental suffering.
... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings in this world live in peace.
May all beings in this world live happily... live happily... live happily.

May all beings:
... be free from anger.
... be free from ill will.
... be free from jealousy.
... be free from mental suffering.
... be free from physical suffering.
May all beings live in peace.
May all beings live happily... live happily... live happily.

Sādhu! Sādhu! Sādhu! 🙏
